A Love Letter
Our prints are designed in Auckland, a city where the bush comes down to the harbour, where you can hear a tūī from your back garden and find nīkau palms growing in the suburbs.
These are the birds and plants of this place: the ones that land on your fence, grow at the end of your street, fill the reserves you walk through on a Sunday. Rendered large, in ink, with the kind of attention they deserve.
These first two collections are our love letter to Aotearoa.
The Artist
Ashley Bray
Kia ora! I'm Ashley, a mum, wife, corporate professional and artist based in Auckland, New Zealand. I started Potluck Studio with one goal in mind - to create original bold ink printable designs that honour the traditional styles I love and bring a sense of modernity, precision and space.
I grew up on the east coast of Australia, surrounded by rainforest, birds, and the particular eastern light. My mum would hang beautiful sarongs on our walls and fill every corner with plants. That was my first education in what a considered space could do: how textiles, art and living things could make a home feel like it belonged to someone. I've been thinking about space-making ever since.
I moved to Aotearoa in 2013 and fell in love all over again: different birds, different bush, a different quality of green. Potluck Studio Prints is my expression of what that second falling-in-love looks like on a wall.
The Method
Each piece relies on a collaborative, four-part production system passed down from bird-and-flower woodblock printing: historically, a print needed a publisher to guide the vision, an artist to set the composition, a carver to etch the lines, and a printer to bring the colours to life.
I work the same way. I choose the subject, set the composition and palette, hold the lines the work stays inside, and decide what is published.
Each piece is vector linework, referencing the beauty and simplicity of Aotearoa's botany and birds. Finished the way a woodblock would be: key-lines, no two leaves or feathers the same, and a grain seed unique to each piece. I use AI design tools for this line and colour work.
Files ship print-ready, vector PDF as the primary file, sized for any print up to and including the listing's largest format, with the credit line in the margin outside the trim.
The Collections
Bird & Flower and The Little Ones are my first collections for the studio. Every piece is original and begins with a New Zealand species I know from the garden, the bush track or the beach, drawn until it reads true.
The drawing language borrows from the bird-and-flower woodblock tradition: a confident ink key-line, flat colour fields, asymmetric composition. The influence is graphic only. The subjects are strictly kiwi: tūī and kōwhai, kererū, kōtare, the rockpool at the end of the beach.
